Whether you plan to complete the project on your own or hire a contractor to do the work for you, every homeowner should know the basics of roofing. It is important to know the basics when you are shopping for materials. Otherwise, you will not know what to buy or how much of each product to purchase. Many contractors do not purchase the roofing materials that are needed. They require the homeowner to do so, and the materials have to be on site prior to the start of the job. Many sales associates will offer help in determining how much of a product you need, based on the square footage of you roof. But knowing the basics gives homeowners an advantage, so that sales associates cannot take advantage. Roofing materials usually cannot be returned once they are purchased. If a sales associate tells you that you need too much of a product, you will be stuck with the excess.
